EPL treats and prevents wood surface problems by delivering a protective plastic coat to the surface of your outdoor wood. EPL creates a clear layer of polymer on top of your outdoor wood. The elements never get to the wood and the wood never touches you.
Perfect for: Picnic Benches, Playground Structures, Decks, Fences, and Handrails
What is EPL? EPL stands for Elastic Plastic. These features will create a clear plastic coating on your outdoor wood with a revolutionary result.
How long will the EPL coating last? You should reapply once a year to maintain the protective coating so the wood will take on it's natural color and hue.
Can I put EPL over other coating products? Yes, EPL can be applied over other products. Coating EPL over paints and some stains that contain wax limits EPL to the bonding strength of the paint or stain. For stains that do not contain wax, staining your wood then using multiple coats of EPL will give your outdoor wood a furniture look.
What is the coverage rate for EPL? The first coat will cover 200-400 square feet per gallon. Additional coats will cover 300-600 square feet per gallon. The coverage rate varies upon your woods condition. A 3.5 gallon pail will coat a typical 300 square foot deck with two coats (2 mils).
Oil-Based Sealers vs. EPL Wood Coating
Oil Based Sealers
EPL Wood Coating
Type:
Non film forming solvent solution of oil.
Water based film forming binder of high molecular weight polymer.
Process:
Solvent carries oil into wood preventing water absorption.
Clear polymeric top coat forms a barrier to water, sun and fungus.
Protection:
Oil provides no safety from splinters and temporarily seals CCA wood preservatives.
EPL prevents direct contact with splinters and CCA wood preservatives.
Appearance:
Darkened flat look with oily residue.
EPL creates a clear glossy finish with a plastic feel. EPL allows wood to assume it's natural hue and color.
Durability:
Low molecular weight oils dissipate in harsh outdoor conditions.
EPL is a high molecular weight polymer that maintains a protective film structure under harsh conditions.
Safety:
Oil based sealers contain hazardous solvents (~350+gm/liter) and biocides. They can not be used on Ozone Action Days. Oil makes wood more flammable.
EPL has 41 gms/liter VOCs, contains an FDA food contact rated biocide and can be used on Ozone Action Days. EPL resists ignition.
Cleanup:
Dirt and grease absorb into oil sealers.
EPL's layers protect the wood from dirt, grease, graffiti and bird droppings making them all removable.
